Another Example from TV

Another Example from TV

Now that I have a blog about grandparenting, it seems like I see good and bad examples of grandparenting everywhere, especially on TV. It's been years since I watched Everybody Loves Raymond, but the other day I remembered something from an episode I thought might apply. So I went to Google and found that episode and watched it. It was in Season 4, episode 17.

In this episode, the daughter Ally has traded a stack of "Hackidu" cards for just one Hackidu card from a friend. Ray thinks this was a bad trade and made her undo her trade. As the adults were talking about it, Marie (Ray's mother and the kid's grandma) came in and asked what they were talking about. Then she surprised all of them by telling them all about the characters on the cards and that the one Ally wanted was a very rare card that was worth $65. When everyone looked at her in shock she said, "What? I'm Grandma. I have this and candy!"

As I've thought about this scene, I realized that she had it pretty much right. One of the best ways to bond with your grandkids is by learning all about their hobbies and interests. Kids love to talk about their favorite things! So, if you're having trouble carrying on conversations with your grandkids, try learning more about what they are into. You can even ask them to teach you about it. It will give you things to talk about with them and provide possible activities to do with them.

As for the candy....I admit I have a Grandma Jar at my house that I try to have full of candy or other treats. The kids know that it's there and love to see what's inside!

You never know where inspiration will come from, even a silly sitcom!
